The Egyptian Cabinet will resign Oct. 12 when President Hosni Mubarak begins his second six-year term, the semiofficial newspaper Al Ahram reported Friday.

The newspaper said Mubarak would ask the current Cabinet to resign immediately after taking the oath of office before the People’s Assembly, or Parliament, on Oct. 12.

However, Al Ahram said Mubarak “is likely to ask the current Cabinet to continue until a new one is formed on Oct. 13 or (he) announces an expected reshuffled Cabinet the same day.”

Mubarak became president Oct. 14, 1981 after the assassination of Anwar Sadat Oct. 6 by a group of Muslim radicals. A state of emergency has been in effect since and opposition politicians have urged Mubarak to end it.
