The Nation : Record Cold Covers Midsection of U.S.

Residents across a large part of the nation’s midsection awoke to record cold, with temperatures around the freezing mark from Minnesota to Texas. Rain showers lingered from the Ohio Valley to New England, and snow flurries were forecast from West Virginia to Ohio. High temperatures reached only into the 40s and 50s from the Great Lakes through the Ohio Valley and the central Appalachians. Record lows were tied or broken in at least 25 cities, including 17 degrees--the low temperature for the day--in Gunnison, Colo., 24 in Duluth, Minn., and Eau Claire, Wis., 27 in Lincoln, Neb., and 39 in Midland-Odessa, Tex.
