Soviet Jewish activist Ida Nudel refused an order by a Soviet official to “immediately” pick up her exit visa, telling him she first had to observe Yom Kippur, the Jewish Day of Atonement, Nudel’s sister in Jerusalem said. Elana Friedman told Israeli Television that Nudel, 55, told the official, “I can’t come immediately; it’s Yom Kippur.” Nudel had tried for 16 years to leave the Soviet Union and join her relatives in Israel.
