The Israeli army blocked all access to the country from occupied territories as Jews flocked to synagogues by the thousands to observe Judaism’s most solemn day--Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. On Yom Kippur 14 years ago, Syria and Egypt launched an attack against the Jewish state and were soon joined by other Arab armies. The blockade was to prevent traffic from the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip, home to about 1.4 million Arabs, from entering Israel. Traffic came to a virtual standstill in the nation as secular and devout Jews forsook automobiles in keeping with the rabbis’ ban on driving.
