Philippine Col. Gregorio (Gringo) Honasan, the fugitive leader of a bloody coup attempt in August, dismissed recent threats by Secretary of State George P. Shultz to cut off all U.S. aid to the Philippines if the government is overthrown. “No, he’s lying through his teeth,” Honasan was quoted as saying in an interview conducted at a hide-out in central Luzon and published by the Manila Bulletin and its sister newspaper, Tempo. Honasan also criticized repeated U.S. avowals of support for President Corazon Aquino, charging that “the Americans will always work on the basis of enlightened self-interest.”
