Local News in Brief : Big Sewer Bills Mailed Out

Share

Assessment bills ranging from $12,874 to $4.66 million have been received by Malibu property owners for a proposed regional sewer system that the county is considering building without voter approval.

The price for the sewer system has been estimated at nearly $87 million by the county’s consultant for the project, $22 million more than the previous estimate. About 2,600 property owners have been billed pending a vote on the project by county supervisors Oct. 22.

Charges are based on the development potential of individual parcels, with the assessment for a single-family home set at $12,874. The Los Angeles Athletic Club received a $4.66 million bill for a 48-acre parcel at the intersection of Topanga Canyon Road and the Pacific Coast Highway that it plans to develop into a recreational facility.

County officials will be available Thursday and Oct. 15 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the county public works building to discuss the bills with Malibu residents, and from 5 to 9 p.m. on those days at Malibu Community Room next to the Malibu Public Library.

Supervisors can build the system without voter approval because the Board of Health declared septic tank systems in Malibu a health hazard in 1985.
