Ex-U.S. Official’s Jail Term Stayed; No Reason Offered

WASHINGTON — A federal judge has stayed without explanation the one-year sentence imposed on C. McClain Haddow, a former Department of Health and Human Services official convicted of conflict-of-interest charges.
Defense attorney Brian Gettings on Monday refused to comment on why U.S. District Judge Gerhard Gesell had stayed his client’s prison term. In a one-sentence order issued Friday, Gesell said Haddow’s sentence “is stayed in all respects pending further order.”
Haddow, 37, pleaded guilty to charges that he accepted $55,330 from improper speech writing contracts he arranged for two friends and in a private foundation he helped set up under government auspices.
