A woman was arrested on Sept. 28 in the West German town of Haan, in the Ruhr Valley, on suspicion of attempting to arrange the illegal sale of more than $1 billion worth of weapons, West German authorities said. The arms included two frigates, three submarines, 200 tanks, 30 helicopters and 22 fighter planes, Helmuth Pathe, a prosecutor in the city of Wuppertal, said. He said Ingeborg Charlotte Petzold-De Gramsch, 53, was believed to belong to an “international organization” dealing in U.S., French and Argentine-built weapons. Pathe refused to comment on a report by the newsmagazine Stern that the military equipment may have been destined for Iran.
