A resounding majority of voters in Alaska’s biggest city decided Wednesday to change the name of Anchorage’s Martin Luther King Jr. Performing Arts Center. Some Anchorage residents voted to drop King’s name claiming the center should be named after an Alaskan. But Don Smith, who spearheaded the petition drive to repeal a government decision last year to name the center after the slain civil rights leader, acknowledged he didn’t think much of King. Critics said the drive smacked of racism and predicted the center would be boycotted when it’s renamed.
