The 20-year-old Golden Cove Shopping Center is getting new paint and staircases, added office space, better lighting and air conditioning and improved parking.

The center “is 20 years old, and we felt it needed to be a bit more contemporary,” said Richard G. Funke, coordinator of the $1-million refurbishing project for Sierra Real Estate Equity Trust, which owns the complex at Hawthorne Boulevard and Palos Verdes Drive South.

The center is holding an anniversary party Oct. 24 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Charitable, religious, business and social organizations may participate with a booth. Space will be provided by the center at no charge.

Funke said the center, which is anchored by Safeway market and two restaurants, does not plan to add retail tenants, but there will be room for more offices. “We hope this will add to our revenue by giving us wider space for offices,” he said.

Sierra also owns the larger, 25-year-old Peninsula Center in Rolling Hills Estates, which is undergoing a $6-million renovation that includes additional stores, new building facades and improved parking and landscaping.
