Israeli troops fought a gun battle with four heavily armed Palestinian guerrillas in the occupied Gaza Strip near Gaza City, and all the guerrillas and an Israeli secret service agent were killed, an army statement said. Maj. Gen. Yitzhak Mordechai, head of the southern front, said the guerrillas were on their way to attack an unknown target. The Palestinians belonged to Islamic Jihad (Islamic Holy War), a pro-Iranian Muslim fundamentalist group, the army said.
