In a move marking the end of a freeze on high-level contacts, French Foreign Minister Jean-Bernard Raimond arrived in Damascus on an official visit seeking Syrian help in freeing French hostages in Lebanon. He immediately sat down for talks with Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk Shareh. Diplomats said Raimond’s two-day visit marks a return to normal relations after France joined European Communities partners last November in imposing sanctions on Syria for its alleged involvement in a London bomb plot. Six Frenchmen are being held hostage in Lebanon, presumably by pro-Iranian Muslim militants.
