Florida’s citrus industry will produce its biggest harvest in five years, according to a U.S. Department of Agriculture prediction. The department’s first crop forecast of the new season estimated 190 million boxes of oranges, grapefruit and specialty citrus fruit would be produced compared to 181.6 million boxes of Florida citrus harvested in the 1986-87 season. The department predicted Florida growers would produce 130 million boxes of oranges, up from 119.7 million a year ago, and 51 million boxes of grapefruit, compared with 49.8 million boxes last season.
