Delaware has adopted an innovative sentencing procedure that allows judges to tailor the punishment to fit the crime and the defendant, spelling out alternatives to incarceration for nonviolent offenders. The alternatives under the new system include halfway houses, house arrest, intensive probation and probation coupled with drug or alcohol rehabilitation.
