About a dozen anarchists and pacifists occupied the south tower of Notre Dame Cathedral for two hours Sunday to demand freedom for a jailed draft resister, witnesses said.

The protesters unfurled a large black banner with white letters reading “Free Eric Hebert.” Pamphlets tossed from the cathedral tower said Hebert was given a one-year sentence “because he is an anarchist and pacifist. He refuses any participation in a future war or to serve interests which are not his.”
