Queen Elizabeth accepted the end of more than a century of British sovereignty over Fiji, expressing sadness at the takeover in the South Pacific nation. In a statement released during the Commonwealth summit of former British colonies being held in Vancouver, Canada, the queen said she accepted with regret the resignation of her representative in Fiji, Governor General Penaia Ganilau. Lt. Col. Sitiveni Rabuka--who seized power on Sept. 25 for the second time in five months--has declared Fiji a republic.
