AIDS Panel to Probe Drug Approval Setup

WASHINGTON —
President Reagan’s AIDS panel called today for a review of the government’s drug approval process to determine whether bureaucratic hurdles are needlessly slowing development of new anti-AIDS compounds.
“We’ve heard both sides on this,” said retired Adm. James Watkins, who presided over his first meeting as chairman of the controversial commission. “We’d like to hear some official testimony.”
Watkins suggested “we look at this to see if perceived bureaucratic hurdles are there or are not there.”
