UNESCO Officials Delay Vote on Chief
PARIS — The Executive Board of UNESCO on Friday postponed for 24 hours a vote to nominate a director general in response to a request for a delay from African nations, organization officials said.
The move came as Federico Mayor Zaragosa, a 53-year-old biochemist from Spain, appeared to have the necessary votes to defeat Amadou Mahtar M’Bow of Senegal. M’Bow, UNESCO’s director general for 13 years, is seeking an unprecedented third term.
Both the United States and Britain have withdrawn from the 158-nation U.N. Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization in protest against M’Bow’s policies and administration.
