Turkish Prime Minister Turgut Ozal won a crucial parliamentary victory for early general elections, but the vote failed to end Turkey’s worst political crisis since 1980. “We have just . . . saved the country from the brink of turmoil,” Ozal told his conservative Motherland Party after passage of a bill setting a Nov. 29 election. The vote followed a court decision that the candidate selection process for the elections was unconstitutional. The bill changing the election law was adopted after a mass walkout by opposition parties, who charged that the new election date does not leave enough time to hold local primaries.
