Soviet authorities have mellowed on heavy metal, Billboard magazine reports. The raucous rock style won new respectability in the Soviet Union recently when the state-run Melodiya record company announced plans to release its first heavy metal LP. The album, recorded a year ago by the band Cruise, features Valeri Gaina, the nation’s top rock guitarist. Melodiya has also approved new record packages featuring Cruise and other Soviet rock bands for European distribution and a first-ever heavy metal concert by Soviet bands next year in Madrid.
