San Clemente : Two Hurt When Trailer Jackknifes, Catches Fire

A Bonita man and his 3-year-old daughter remained hospitalized Monday after suffering extensive burns when their van and camper trailer jackknifed on the San Diego Freeway and burst into flames Sunday afternoon.

Kellie Rasmusson, 3, was in serious condition Monday at UCI Medical Center in Orange with second- and third-degree burns on her arms and legs, a hospital spokeswoman said. Her father, Kaul Rasmusson, 32, was listed in fair condition at the hospital with second- and third-degree burns to both his arms.

Rasmusson’s van was southbound on the San Diego Freeway just south of El Camino Real. It was towing a camper trailer at about 2 p.m. when the trailer began to fishtail, said Officer Ken Daily of the California Highway Patrol. As Rasmusson tried to straighten out the swaying trailer, it jackknifed and broke away from the van. Both vehicles then burst into flames.

Daily said the explosion occurred when a propane tank between the van and trailer was crushed.

Rasmusson’s 10-year-old son, Ryan, was treated at the scene for minor injuries, Daily said.
