U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization chief Edouard Saouma said that cereal stocks in developing countries will fall this year to their lowest levels in a decade because of bad weather. Addressing the opening session in Rome of FAO’s Committee on Food Aid Policies and Programs, Saouma also warned that Ethiopia faces another famine and appealed for urgent food aid to avoid a repetition of the 1984-85 disaster. He added that the weakest and most erratic monsoon season in a century will lead to substantial losses in the summer crop in India and that harvests will also be reduced in Indonesia, Cambodia, Thailand, Laos, the Philippines, Sri Lanka and Vietnam.
