Kasparov Evens Chess Match as Karpov Resigns

World chess champion Gary Kasparov evened the score of his title defense when challenger Anatoly Karpov resigned the adjourned fourth game of the match Tuesday.

The adjourned game was considered hopeless by chess experts after a night’s analysis. The score in the 24-game series is now tied at 2-2. Kasparov, 24, had achieved a material advantage of two pawns and Karpov’s active position could not offset this superiority.

The majority of grand masters assembled in Seville’s Lope de Vega Theater had thought that Kasparov’s advantage would bring him a victory and equality in the match.

The victory should give Kasparov a slight advantage in the contest due to the match rules.

The match will be played until one player amasses 12 1/2 points or wins six games. In the event of a 12-12 tie, Kasparov retains the title. Victories count one point and draws a half-point.
