Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres met secretly with Ethiopian Foreign Minister Gerhanu Bayeh in New York last month to discuss Ethiopian Jewry, an Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman reported. The spokesman said the meeting turned cool when Peres brought up the issue of 15,000 Jews still living in Ethiopia. Israel hopes they will be allowed to emigrate. About 7,800 Ethiopian Jews were allowed to leave for Israel from November, 1984, to January, 1985, in a secret airlift originating in Sudan.
