Fullerton : Doctor to Be Honored for Work at Chernobyl
The UCLA bone-marrow specialist who responded to the Chernobyl nuclear reactor disaster in by flying to the Soviet Union to help radiation victims will be honored Monday by the Orange County-based Pacific Interfaith Peace Prize Foundation.
Dr. Robert Peter Gale, a professor who heads the Department of Medicine, Hematology and Oncology, will receive the foundation’s award at a 7 p.m. banquet at the First Christian Church Fellowship Hall, 109 E. Wilshire Ave., Fullerton. Later, Gale will speak about his work in the Soviet Union following the April, 1986, nuclear accident.
Although banquet reservations have been filled, foundation officials said visitors can come to hear Gale’s talk.
This is the second peace prize awarded by the foundation, formed in 1985 by Orange County ministers, Cal State Fullerton professors and others interested in studying conditions that promote world peace.
Potential award recipients must be from the Pacific region. Last year the winner was former Costa Rican president Rodrigo Carazo, who founded the United Nations-sponsored University for Peace.
