Planned Austrian Fund Cuts Protested
More than 30,000 people, some carrying signs declaring, “Education Instead of Arms,” marched through the streets of Vienna on Saturday to protest planned cuts in state subsidies and social benefits.
The demonstration was called to protest a government austerity program that aims to reduce the country’s $5.5-billion budget deficit. Organizers also protested for more employment.
Police reported no arrests but said some store windows were smashed.
Protest participants included retirees, students and workers from state industry.
