Local News in Brief : Produce Quarantined

Share

No home-grown fruit or vegetables may be carried in or out of Los Angeles International Airport because of a quarantine imposed after six peach fruit flies were trapped in the area late last month, agriculture officials advised travelers Monday.

The quarantine, ordered by the California Department of Food and Agriculture and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, prohibits the moving of home-grown fruits and vegetables attacked by the pest within or outside a 100-square-mile zone including Culver City, Marina del Rey, Inglewood, Westchester, Lennox, El Segundo, Hawthorne and Ladera Heights.

Commercial fruit must be approved and certified by agriculture officials before it can be shipped.
