Norfolk Southern lost $248.5 million in the third quarter due to a one-time special charge of $620 million, $525 million of which is for a restructuring. In the year-ago quarter, the New York-based railway earned $127.8 million. Without the charge, income for the quarter was down 19.2% to $103.3 million. Transportation revenue was up slightly during the quarter, but expenses also increased, the company said.
