Local News in Brief : Drug Fund Freeze Opposed
Los Angeles City Controller Rick Tuttle called Tuesday for the defeat of congressional attempts to freeze an estimated $23 million in drug enforcement funds he said are owed to the city.
Tuttle said he will lobby members of a congressional conference committee that is considering the freeze on money seized by local police during drug raids. The fund, established in 1984, has funneled more than $7.3 million to Los Angeles so far. Some of those funds have helped the Los Angeles Police Department hire 250 more officers this year, Deputy Chief Glenn Levant said.
Levant and Tuttle expressed concern that the proposed one-year freeze would be extended if adopted.
