Nyerere Remains Head of Tanzania Party

DODOMA, Tanzania —
Former Tanzanian President Julius K. Nyerere was reelected overwhelmingly Saturday to another five-year term as chairman of his Party of the Revolution, the African nation’s only political party.
The vote ended months of speculation that Nyerere, 65, founder of Tanzania’s socialist system, might make way as party chief for the man to whom he handed the presidency in 1985, Ali Hassan Mwinyi. Mwinyi was reelected party deputy chairman.
