Chatam Offered a Personal Touch

The demise of the beloved Chatam ends a special era in Westwood (Times, Oct. 15).

In an era of expansion in buildings and grounds, the Chatam virtually stood for the touch of care versus depersonalization, which often results from expansion.

The Chatam even had a singles round table where people interacted instead of being shunted off to isolated tables of ones. The entire restaurant had the aura of a private dining room where you were greeted often by name and fussed over like a privileged client.

My favorite was the area around the pub. To me, it was almost akin to the English pub. The coziness was conducive to conversation, and often you couldn’t help but overhear the therapy being conducted at the bar between bartenders and the regulars. It was priceless!
