More than 20,000 people rallied to protest the first U.S.-Japan joint military exercise on Japan’s southernmost main island of Kyushu. Eight people were hurt when rightists threw stones and beat protesters, police reported. The rally near the exercise ground of the Japanese Self-Defense Forces in Oita, 500 miles southwest of Tokyo, was sponsored by the Japan Socialist Party and the 4.5-million-member General Council of Trade Unions. The 10-day exercise was opened by about 1,600 soldiers of the U.S. Army’s 25th Infantry Division and a similar number of Japanese personnel.
