A 10-hour general strike by Peronist-controlled labor unions paralyzed Argentina’s industry and commerce in a protest against the economic policies of President Raul Alfonsin. For the first time, staff workers in the presidential palace joined the walkout, the eighth general strike since Alfonsin became president four years ago. The protest was aimed primarily at an Oct. 14 austerity package that raised prices of bus service and electricity, increased taxes and lifted some price controls.
