Local News in Brief : Irvine : Toxic Waste Awareness to Be Topic of Series

Share

To promote public awareness about toxic waste and how to dispose of it, UC Irvine will stage lectures, exhibits and demonstrations Saturday.

Sponsored by UCI Extension, Hazardous Materials Awareness Day is a bid to educate the public and to avoid widespread backlash when waste-treatment plants are proposed in Orange County. Next year, hearings will be held on a county plan for treatment plants, incinerators or storage sites for toxic waste.

All toxic waste landfills are being shut down in 1990 by order of Congress, because the chemicals are seeping from the soil into water supplies.

At UCI on Saturday, there will be lectures about common household hazardous materials, tap water and how safe is it and the toxic waste disposal dilemma. Officials will also demonstrate how to contain a toxic spill in the home or office. The event will take place near the Campus Drive-Berkeley Street entrance to the university. It runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is free.
