Shultz Threat Suspect Faces 6 Gun Charges

A federal grand jury on Thursday indicted a Massachusetts man on weapons charges related to his alleged threats to kill Secretary of State George P. Shultz and President Reagan.

The indictment adds two federal and four District of Columbia weapons charges against Edward L. Gallo, 41, who was arrested Tuesday on charges of threatening a public official and carrying a weapon across state lines to carry out a threat against a public official.

Held Without Bond

Gallo, of Worcester, Mass., remained in custody without bond Thursday, awaiting a hearing today before a U.S. magistrate who had ordered that he undergo a psychiatric evaluation.

Gallo was arrested at a northeast Washington hotel after police were tipped off by his mother, according to court papers. She reportedly told police that he had threatened to kill the secretary of state and had made threats against Reagan.

Police officers found two shotguns and an AR-15 assault rifle as well as hundreds of rounds of ammunition in his car, which was parked at the Best Western Regency Congress Inn, a police spokesman said.

Claims to Be Tourist

Gallo, after his arrest, said he was a “tourist on vacation” who had brought the guns to go hunting.

According to an affidavit filed in federal court, Gallo’s mother told a State Department investigator that he had left their home Sunday with the words: “Shultz, you’re dead.”

The indictment charges him with two federal violations: transporting an unregistered firearm and possessing an unregistered firearm.

In addition, it charges him, under District of Columbia laws, with possessing a prohibited firearm, two counts of possessing an unregistered firearm and one count of possessing the unregistered ammunition for the weapons.
