Only in L.A.--Griffin’s Home

Share

It seems that when our society likes something it must have that something. In the case where Griffin liked the hill above Hollywood, he had to have it. When we “appreciate” nature’s gifts it often means that we exploit them. Hunters feel that they are at one with nature when they are in pursuit of their game. People feel that they are in touch with nature when they are in “the country” (the dairy lands). Griffin feels that he is enjoying his mountain to its fullest by living on it.

In each case the enjoyment is often the result of the exploitation of nature. If Griffin loves his mountain so much why is he removing it? What really bothers me is that he is darn proud of the forces he has brought together to conquer his mountain. Two million cubic yards of soil removed? Is leveling a mountain the way to appreciate its beauty?

This type of environmental love is lethal in the hands of a man with so much money. Thank goodness Lee Iacocca doesn’t have the same type of admiration for the Sierra!
