Local News in Brief : Costa Mesa : McIlwain Named Dean of Physical Education

James L. McIlwain, former cross-country and track and field coach at Orange Coast College, has been named the college’s dean of physical education and health.

McIlwain, 51, succeeds Sue Brown, who last spring became dean of admissions and records at Orange Coast.

A resident of Mission Viejo, McIlwain headed the cross-country and track programs at Orange Coast from 1966 to 1978, when he was named assistant division chairman of the physical education and health division.

McIlwain holds a master’s degree from UC Santa Barbara. He was cross-country coach at San Marcos High in 1961 and track and cross-country coach at El Rancho High in Pico Rivera from 1962 to 1965. He was an assistant cross-country coach at Orange Coast in 1965 before assuming the head coaching job a year later.
