David Jenkins, Ex-British Track Star, Pleads Guilty in Smuggling of Steroids

SAN DIEGO — Former British track star David Jenkins pleaded guilty Friday to taking part in a multimillion-dollar steroid smuggling ring.
He made the plea in exchange for a prosecutor’s promise to seek a maximum prison term of 10 years.
However, U.S. District Court Judge J. Lawrence Irving cautioned Jenkins that by admitting to four felony counts, he was vulnerable to a maximum sentence under the law: 16 years in prison and a $1-million fine.
Jenkins, who lives in Carlsbad with his wife Carole, entered the plea to counts of conspiracy to defraud the United States, holding counterfeit steroids for sale, introducing misbranded steroids into interstate commerce and receiving anabolic steroids subject to seizure.
Assistant U.S. Atty. Phillip Halpern said 32 other counts were dropped in exchange for the plea agreement. Sentencing was scheduled for May 9, 1988.
Jenkins, 35, refused comment on the case.
