Police in Tokyo have recovered five valuable paintings--one by Maurice Utrillo and four by Camille Corot--that were stolen in France and sold in Japan, a Japanese newspaper has reported. Quoting unidentified Japanese and French police officials, The English-language Asahi Evening News said the Utrillo work “Big Clock on the River Bank” had been recovered in Osaka, although it did not give more details. The painting by the French Cubist was stolen early this year from a home in Paris. The four recovered paintings by Corot, a 19th-Century French landscape painter, were identified as “Evening,” “An Orchard,” “Sunset Semur” and “Boy Wearing a Cap.” The paper did not say where they were found, and Japanese police declined to comment on the newspaper report.
