Lebanon’s trade unions called off a five-day general strike after the government promised to form a special committee to look into ways of boostig the value of the pound. Antoine Bechara, head of the General Labor Federation which called the strike, said the committee will include representatives of the federation, the Central Bank and the premier’s office. Lebanon’s pound has lost more than 82% of its value against the dollar this year. The government promise came after 100,000 Muslim and Christian demonstrators joined forces at Beirut’s “Green Line,” a symbol of divided Lebanon, to protest the country’s worst economic crisis.
