Edouard Saouma was elected to a third six-year term as head of the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization, defeating an African challenger supported by the United States and other major donor nations. Saouma, 61, of Lebanon, was reelected, 94 to 59, over Moise Mensah of Benin. The vote, by secret ballot, came during the organization’s biennial conference in Rome. A simple majority was required for election. Mensah had said before the election that he was comfortably ahead with at least 80 pledged votes.
