Seven people were killed and more than 150 injured in a stampede at a dance hall in Santa Catarina, Mexico, authorities reported. As many as 8,000 people were packed in the La Fama Social Center in the Monterrey suburb, although the hall was designed for a maximum of 4,000, according to Napoleon Cantu Cerna, attorney general of Nuevo Leon state. He said the crowd apparently panicked because of a lack of oxygen and jammed the exit, trampling the victims. Other sources said the stampede ensued when police fired warning shots at a group of youths trying to push their way into the overcrowded hall.
