The World : Protests Rack Sri Lanka
Sinhalese militants opposed to an Indian-brokered peace accord set fires, disrupted transportation and cut power in many parts of Sri Lanka. The protests coincided with the opening of a three-day debate in Parliament on the July 29 Indo-Sri Lankan accord, which would grant limited autonomy to Tamil areas in the east and northeast of the island nation. Troops sealed off Parliament and armored cars patrolled streets after a powerful bomb ripped through a suburban Colombo bus stop Monday at rush hour, killing at least 28 people and wounding more than 100. Another bomb today shook the hill town of Kandy. It damaged a communications tower, but there were no immediate reports of casualties.
