British Airways won approval for a controversial takeover of the smaller, money-losing British Caledonian Airways. But the government said there were conditions attached to the approval. Trade and Industry Secretary Lord Young said BA must surrender 5,000 takeoff and landing slots at Gatwick, London’s second airport, now held by BC. In addition, within a month of a takeover, BA must relinquish the smaller carrier’s domestic route licenses, as well as those governing flights between Gatwick and 10 European cities.
