Besieged by critics seeking a revival of French-Canadian separatism, Pierre Marc Johnson resigned as leader of the Parti Quebecois a little more than a week after the death of party founder Rene Levesque. Since Johnson, 41, became leader of the Quebec opposition party two years ago, its membership has slumped from 75,000 to 54,000. Criticism of his leadership intensified after the death of Levesque on Nov. 1. Johnson had followed Levesque’s lead in retreating from the demand for autonomy for French-speaking Quebec from English-speaking Canada after a 1980 referendum.
