13th Chess Game in Championship Match Ends in Draw

The 13th game of the world chess championship between Gary Kasparov and Anatoly Karpov ended in a draw Friday in Seville, Spain. Kasparov, the champion, leads the series, 3-2 in wins and 7-6 in points. Six wins or 12 1/2 points are needed for victory in the 24-game match.

Friday’s game was hard fought. It began with the Gruenfeld defense, which Kasparov has used in all seven of his games with black. Karpov obtained a tiny advantage from the opening but could not make progress after Kasparov managed to blockade white’s passed pawn. Near the end, Kasparov had an edge, which also proved insufficient for a win.
