U.S. intelligence analysts are evaluating reports that the Soviet Union is operating an electronic listening post in southern Iran to monitor the activities of U.S. Navy and European vessels protecting shipping in the Persian Gulf, United Press International reported. The intercept station also was said to be monitoring ship-to-ship and ship-to-shore communications of naval forces in the gulf to learn more about North Atlantic Treaty Organization activities, an intelligence analyst told the wire service. But another U.S. intelligence source said reports of the listening post "have not checked out."
