Foreign car sales in Japan rose to 6,627 in October, a 34.8% rise from a year earlier and the 46th successive year-on-year increase, the Japan Automobile Importers Association reported.

October’s total, however, fell far short of September’s record 10,089.

West German-made cars, accounting for 70% of the October total, rose 27.3% from a year earlier to 4,637.

These included 1,102 Bayerische Motoren Werke AG (BMW) cars, up 41.4%; 975 Daimler-Benz AG (Mercedes-Benz), up 38.1%, and 829 Volkswagen AG cars, up 37.1%.

British-made cars accounted for 9.1% of the import market; French automobiles claimed 6.4%, and Swedish cars, accounting for 5.4%, rose 48% to 361 in October.
