Egypt’s attorney general Sunday charged 33 people with the attempted assassinations last summer of two former interior ministers and a leading newspaper editor, the state-run Middle East News Agency said.

The agency said some of the defendants were also accused of killing a policeman during an ensuing gun battle at their hideout.

The intended victims were Hassan abu Basha and Nabawi Ismail, both former interior ministers, and Makram Mohammed Ahmed, the editor in chief of the state-run weekly Mussawar. No one was seriously hurt.
