Protesters in Bangladesh battled police, hurled homemade bombs and disrupted train service in a nationwide general strike that was extended through Tuesday in an opposition bid to oust President Hussain Mohammed Ershad. In the capital of Dhaka, officials said that protesters threw more than 100 handmade bombs at police, government facilities and other targets. Police responded with tear gas and arrested 115 people, bringing to about 1,900 the number detained in the last week. Ershad held a special Cabinet meeting and reportedly discussed renewing talks with the opposition.
